Grundy Center defeated Eagle Grove, 49-0, at Spartan Stadium in the Spartans’ regular-season finale.
The Spartans take a 47-game winning streak into the postseason, starting at home with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Oct. 24. It’s also the sixth-consecutive district title for the Spartans, going undefeated in district play in all six seasons.
“We had a great week of preparation, and I think the kids had a lot of fun, and they came out tonight and played lights-out football,” Grundy Center head coach Travis Zajac said. “Defending the option is never an easy bargain, and they got some first downs and some yards tonight, but for us to maintain the shutout, it’s a huge statement by us.”
Grundy Center’s efficient offense spun up 302 yards of total offense, with Pete Lebo accounting for over a third of those yards through seven carries for 75 yards and a score as well as the two touchdown receptions for a total of 39 yards. Judd Jirovsky was 10-of-11 passing for 143 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Lebo made nine stops for the Spartans and five different Grundy Center players recorded at least one tackle for loss, including Aiden Hook with a pair of tackles for loss.
Grundy Center also honored seniors Brayden Davie, Eli Wegmann, Aiden Betts, Britt Meyer, Devin Hinders, Pete Lebo, Judd Jirovsky, Reid Beenken, Ryder Slifer, JD Eckhardt, Chevy Richardson, Charlie Rinard, Elliott Vokes and Brannen Jensen prior to the game.
“They make it look so easy from the outside looking in most Friday nights,” Zajac said. “Only we know as players and coaches how hard it is to prepare and for these seniors to not have lost a game yet in their high school career.”
