Grundy Center volleyball rallies to sweep Wapsie Valley


A huge second-set comeback spurred Grundy Center volleyball to a 3-0 win over Wapsie Valley on Tuesday at Grundy Center High School.

The Spartans, ranked 4th in Class 2A, defeated #11 Wapsie Valley, 25-19, 26-24, 28-26, to finish the regular season 32-9.

Wapsie Valley led 21-10 at one point in the second set before Grundy Center’s comeback. The Warriors also led 23-22 in set three, but Grundy outlasted the visitors to end the match in three.

Ryanne Brubaker led the Spartans with 14 kills and four total blocks; Jenna Blythe added seven kills and was one of three Spartans with two ace serves; Lauren Zajac distributed 22 assists with eight digs and fellow senior co-captain Allison Koch finished with seven digs. Lydia Hook and Caturella Brown steered the defensive effort with 24 and 12 digs, respectively.

Grundy Center begins the postseason at home on Wednesday, Oct. 22 against either Madrid or Colfax-Mingo.
