Grundy Center softball, baseball clinch NICL titles

Grundy Center’s summer sports teams claimed NICL West division titles after doubleheader sweeps of AGWSR in Ackley on Monday.

The softball team won by 7-0, 8-0 margins and baseball won by scores of 14-0 and 7-3. The Spartan girls completed their conference schedule with an 8-1 record; the baseball team improved to 10-0 and finish the West schedule at home against Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Monday, June 30.

Grundy Center eighth-grader Macey Kiewiet locked down the Cougars in Game 1, pitching a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, two walks and one batter hit.

Maddy Hendershot set up the Spartan offense in Game 1, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one walk and three total runs scored. Kiewiet drove in two RBI and Hendershot, Camdyn Aronson, Lauren Zajac and Trinity Jirovsky had one RBI each.

In Game 2, the Spartans smashed five extra-base hits, including a solo home run for Ava Heeren as part of a 3-for-4 performance. Allison Koch added two hits and two RBI and Kiewiet, Aronson and Jirovsky pitched in an RBI each as the game ended after six innings.

Hendershot was the winning pitcher in Game 2, allowing no runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

On the nearby baseball diamond in Ackley, Grundy Center slammed out eight runs in the seventh inning of the 14-0 win in Game 1.

Ryker Thoren and Pete Lebo accounted for three RBI each and Ryder Slifer and Ethan Meester had three hits and two RBI each.

The Spartans were able to coast on an early lead in Game 2 with five runs in the first inning. Hayden Geerdes was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Spartan offense; no one struck out in the nightcap and the Spartans took advantage of four walks and three hit batters via AGWSR pitching.

Grundy Center is at home today for their senior night with Hudson.
