Tuesday’s sports: Spartans take top spots at co-ed golf

Grundy Center’s bringing home all the hardware from Tuesday’s Class 1A state co-ed golf championship at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Judd Jirovsky and Leah Larson shot a 75 to claim the state title, finishing two strokes ahead of teammates Avery Knutsen and Preston Martens as state runners-up.

Larson, Knutsen and Martens are all Spartan seniors, while Jirovsky finished up his junior season at Grundy Center. The Grundy girls were fourth at the state meet earlier this spring, while the boys claimed the second-place trophy in 2A.

Softball, baseball teams rally with run-rule wins

Grundy Center’s summer teams bounced back from losses to Dike-New Hartford on Monday with matching 14-4 victories over Aplington-Parkersburg at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Spartan softball (7-4) finished off the Falcons in four innings. Camdyn Aronson was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and Evelyn Geerdes contributed two RBI with a triple. Macey Kiewiet, Caturella Brown and Allison Koch all chipped in two hits each; Koch scored a team-leading three times on Tuesday.

The girls led 4-2 after the first inning and scored at least one run in each of the four innings, including a 7-spot in the fourth inning to end the game early. Maddy Hendershot notched the pitching victory with four earned runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The 2A No. 8 Spartan baseball team improved to 9-1 after a five-inning victory on Tuesday. Brody Zinkula was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in and Hayden Geerdes added three RBI. Judd Jirovsky went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored after competing in the state co-ed golf tournament earlier in the day.

A-P had an early 4-2 lead after two innings before Grundy Center turned the tables in the third inning with three runs, then added three runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to end it early. The Spartans capitalized on five walks and five batters hit by A-P pitching.

Sophomore pitcher Hayden Geerdes earned the victory with three innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Grundy Center heads to La Porte City for games against Union Community today.
