
Grundy Center boys golf qualified for the Class 2A state tournament with a runner-up finish at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo on Monday.
The Spartans were second as a team with a 323 team score. Waterloo Columbus won the team title with a 319 and East Marshall was the other team qualifier in third at 328 strokes.
Judd Jirovsky led the Spartans with medalist honors after winning a two-hole sudden death playoff with East Marshall’s Cody Weaver, both finishing with 5-over 77s after 18 holes.
West Marshall’s Hunter Polley qualified as a top individual from non-qualifying teams, tying with Grundy Center’s Preston Martens and Columbus’ Max Schuchman with a 78. Oelwein golfers Ethan Anderson and Brandon Tournier tied for the last individual qualifying spot with 79s.
Jalen Kirkpatrick, Eli Wegmann and Jaxon Kiewiet all shot an 84 for the Spartans on a windy Monday in Waterloo and Alex Kiewiet added a non-counting 95.
The Spartans will take aim at the program’s fifth state championship on Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28 back at South Hills for the 2A state tournament. Grundy was third last year when the second day of the tournament at Coldwater in Ames was rained out.
Girls golf competes for state spot on Wednesday
The Grundy Center girls look to join the boys when they compete in a Class 2A regional final at Pine Lake Country Club in South Hardin on Wednesday with a 10 a.m. tee time.
The top two teams will advance to the state meet in Boone, as well as the top six individuals regardless of whether they’re on a state-qualifying team.
GCGR girls advance past Williamsburg
Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer defeated Williamsburg, 4-0, on Monday in Reinbeck to advance in the Class 1A Region 7 tournament.
GCGR improves to 4-10-2 and will travel to Gilbert (9-3-2) on Wednesday. The Tigers are ranked No. 7 in Class 1A.
