GC boys tennis duo takes 4th at districts

Grundy Center’s Carson Laube and Elias Cakerice finished fourth in the district doubles bracket at a Class 1A meet in Decorah on Wednesday.

The duo started the day seeded second and won their opener with Independence’s Mikey Bailey and Mason Ronnebaum, 6-2, 6-2; and advanced to the semifinals with a win over Jonah Carney and Noah Harbaugh of Aplington-Parkersburg, 6-0, 6-1.

In the semifinals, Laube and Cakerice fell short against eventual district champions Liam Chamberlain and Caleb Krieg of Decorah. Keegan Bolhuis and Tyler Wedeking of A-P defeated Laube and Cakerice in the third-place match, 6-4, 6-1.

Grundy Center’s other doubles team of Kael Edwards and Michael Lang won their opening-round match, 6-4, 6-4, but bowed out in straight sets to Bolhuis and Wedeking.

In singles action, Dayton Myers drew eventual third-place finisher Aitor Cuevas of Decorah in the first round. Evan Bingman rallied to a super tiebreaker victory in his first-round match with Sam Janssen of Aplington-Parkersburg, 3-6, 7-5 (10-4), then ran into Keaton Nalean-Carlson of Decorah in the quarterfinals, who won 6-0, 6-0 over Bingman en route to the district title.

Decorah’s doubles team of Elliot Berland and Tristan Hunter finished second in the bracket. In singles play, Nalean-Carlson and Clear Lake’s Leif Lundberg advanced to state as singles champion and singles runner-up, respectively.
